McM III

Yup. To paraphrase the bard, or at least former NFL coach Dennis Green, the high school junior in the highlight video is who you think he is ;-)

Danny McManus, a 5-foot-10, 170-ish defensive back/athlete from St. Thomas Academy in Minnesota, is the younger brother of three-time Dartmouth captain Timmy McManus and Big Green receiver Ryan McManus.

The problem with a bubble (sorry, a seasonal air structure) is that it is, well, by definition seasonal. Put it up, take it down. Put it up, take it down.

They put one up at the Ivy League's southernmost school this year and now it's time to take it down. At least that's what the Daily Pennsylvanian Buzz blog is pleading in a post headlined, Mr. Bilsky, tear down this seasonal air structure! Steve Bilsky, of course, is the Penn athletic director.

If nothing else, check out the picture to see why the fine burghers of Hanover wouldn't be crazy about having one of these things looming over Memorial Field. Not that such a thing is in the plans. Dartmouth is pushing for a "hard-sided" indoor practice facility.

By the way, I kind of like this from the DP: ". . . (T)he seasonal air structure makes Penn Park look like a campsite for the Michelin Man."

OK, this is just plain nuts. An Atlanta high school running back received 105 different letters from Alabama coach Nick Saban in one day. That as opposed to the four or five he usually gets per day. link

Then again, the proposals for a new football stadium at Baylor are kind of over the top as well. (photos) Gorgeous building in a gorgeous setting, but really?

Harvard's national ranking and first trip to the NCAA men's basketball tournament since 1946 have had coattails. From the Harvard Crimson:
On Sunday afternoon, the Crimson earned a commitment from four-star prospect Zena Edosomwan, who turned down scholarship offers from UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, Texas, and Washington and decided to undergo a post-graduate year at Northfield Mount Hermon School (Mass.) in order to attend Harvard.
Two things. First, the Crimson writes:
Currently a senior at Harvard-Westlake School (Calif.), the 6’9", 225-pound forward is a top-100 prospect on Scout.com—the first player of such a distinction on that site to commit to an Ivy League school—as well as a 92 on ESPN.com.
So the kid looks as if he can flat-out play. And second, from the Crimson:
Edosomwan, the jewel and main target of (Coach Tommy) Amaker’s 2012 class, has been determined to attend Harvard since he visited the campus in late September.

And he has taken standardized tests multiple times in order to do so.

Harvard-Westlake coach Greg Hilliard told The Crimson last week that Edosomwan was waiting for the results of his January SAT to determine if he had qualified academically for Harvard.
For some reason, that just doesn't sound very, well, Harvardlike.

With most of the snow gone up here on the mountain and That Certain Hanover High Graduate finished with exams and coming home today, I got our beloved 1984 VW camper out of mothballs yesterday. TCHHG will be doing language study abroad in the spring so we need to cart all her stuff home today. The spacious Vanagon will come in handy for that.

OK, two more things. The VW continues to amaze me. We put it up for the winter in late November and the very first turn of the key and it was purring like a kitten. I mean, it's a 28-year-old vehicle!

And second, most years we wouldn't be able to take the bus down our road for another 3-4 weeks because it's just not very good in the mud. Yes, the road is sloppy and we've got some ruts, but so far – knock on wood – the mud hasn't been that bad. Not like the year we sunk in all the way up to the frame of the car and had to be pulled out and towed home from a half mile away ;-)
